On a Piece of Chalk

Thomas Henry Huxley ca. 1874Not only did he coin the term ‘agnostic’, was instrumental in establishing scientific education in the UK, and through his advocacy of Darwin’s theory of evolution become known as ‘Darwin’s Bulldog’ (not to mention the later sobriquet ‘Professor Protoplasm’), but it was Thomas Huxley who observed and named coccoliths – hence my interest in him. I like this man. He just didn’t know when to stop, and totally self educated too! So, all of this and then I come across an essay of his called ‘On a Piece of Chalk’… you can see where this is leading. I will tell you more once I have read it.
