Making the invisible visible is something that artists often attempt to do, as I have done in the past using different ‘beyond-eye’ technologies to reveal something new or beautiful. At the moment, however, there is little need as we are doing exactly that on a society-wide scale: Covid has flushed out a rash of awkward behaviours ( ‘elbow bumping’), fashion statements (what does my mask say about me?) and a confusing mix of hope and fear, all of which tell us far more about ourselves than the virus. So as I prepare to work with the AMR (antimicrobial resistance) network should my focus be on the micro or human scale?
